Personality:
Rei is a calm, collected young man with a relatively quiet nature. Not much seems to surprise him, and he’s not very easy to annoy – he takes anything that comes his way like a rock (except for a few exceptions), and ignores anything he doesn’t like. However, when someone manages to get him angry, he becomes VERY ANGRY. He’s good at hiding his emotions, and often comes across as a bit of a jerk when he first meets someone.

At first glance, he may appear quite tsun and intimidating. He doesn’t really smile very often, and is a very straightforward character - if you ask his opinion, he’s not going to sugar-coat his words just to spare your feelings, no matter how horrible his comments may be. However with Rei, you know that what you see is what you get, and he’s not going to lie to you about anything. He believes strongly in being truthful, and always staying true to yourself. While his frankness can make him seem uncaring towards people, he actually does – he just shows it in a more roundabout way than most people would. He tends to be a bit quiet, but warms up to people easily, and is in fact pretty kind and understanding, and astonishingly patient (considering tha amount of abuse he's had to put up with). He listens and gives advice to people who tell him their problems, and he’s not judgemental about what their issues may be. He is also extremely loyal, and will fight to the death to protect those he values.


Background:
Raised in the Southeast sector of Almina, Rei was born into a middle-class family. His childhood was more-or-less straightforward - his parents worked to keep the family happy and well-fed, and Rei always had his older sister to keep him company. However, things took a turn for the worst when he was 6. His father started gambling and drinking uncontrollably, often using up the family funds for his pleasure. When money ran out, he turned to loan sharks to continue his spree, taking on debts beyond what the family was capable of paying.

Until one day his father's body was found in a ditch, the body bruised and battered, and having nothing on him but his undergarments.

In an effort to keep the family afloat and try to repay the debts that had now fallen onto the family, his mother worked more and more, eventually falling ill and bedridden. As so, his sister picked up the responsibility once held by his parents, but never disclosed where she was actually working. With loansharks always on their doorstep, young Rei also began "working" - he stole small items from the markets as payments to them. This continued on until one day, his sister too disappeared without a trace. Having to cope with so much tragedy, Rei began aiming for more valuable items to keep the sharks satisfied. This continued on for a year, but the mere pittance that he was earning wasn't enough for the loansharks, and they intended to make Rei and his mother pay for their insolence. Trying to draw them away from his mother, Rei led them away into town, where they cornered him with not-so-good intentions.

His saving grace was a young girl, who'd seen Rei being chased and followed them down the alleyway he'd been cornered into.

Seeing their brutal lashings, she called for them to stop, unknowing of the danger she was putting herself into. Thinking the young noble girl was an unknown contact of Rei's family, they tried to kidnap her. Seeing so, Rei tried to defend her from their advances, but was unable to hold up against the number and strength of the full-grown men. They'd nearly beaten him half to death when help arrived in the form of the girl's guardian and bodyguards. Sitting at death's door, the girl's guardian tried to heal Rei, but sadly announced that his injuries were too severe to be saved. Unwilling to accept that, the girl pleaded for him to be saved, and combined her own healing magics with her guardian's in order to bring him back, nearly costing her own life as well.

When Rei awoke, he was at the girl's home. Physical wounds still bandaged, he was greeted by the girl's guardian, who explained what happened. For some reason, the girl had taken to him and his plight - she'd pleaded with her father, a rich nobleman and merchant, to pay off all his family's debts, and even bring his mother from their home in the slums to the noble household for treatment. Rei was re-united with his mother, and given sanctuary in the noble house.

He spent around a year there, living and learning under the care of the girl's guardian alongside with her. They grew very close, and that year was one of the most enjoyable timea of his life. However his mother's health deteriorated, and she eventually died. After her funeral, the girl's father approached Rei about his future. Knowing that nothing came for free ,Rei was eager to repay his debt to the family. He agreed to go to a training school to learn to fight, and when he was older, to go to the Central sector and attend Almina Academy in order to further his development to protect and defend Almina.

While he was at the training school, the girl often visited him, and when students were allowed home visits, he would stay with the family. But there came the day when she visited him for one final time - her family were moving to the Western Sector, meaning they would likely never see each other again. She gifted him a pendant matching to hers, and promised never to forget each other. Rei swore that one day, he would find her again.

Six years later, Rei arrived at the steps of Almina Academy as he had promised, the pendent hanging around his neck, and holding on to a promise he intended to keep.
